Product Description
What Is Finasteride?
Finasteride is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern hair loss. It is also available under the brand name Propecia and is specifically designed for men experiencing thinning or receding hair.
For many men, finasteride helps slow or stop further hair loss and, in some cases, supports regrowth in areas affected by male pattern baldness. It is taken as a once-daily tablet and works best when used consistently over time.
Clinical evidence shows that finasteride is effective for the majority of men when taken as prescribed.
What Is Finasteride Used For?
Finasteride is prescribed to treat male pattern baldness, also known medically as androgenetic alopecia. This is a hereditary form of hair loss that can be passed down from either side of the family.
Male pattern baldness typically develops gradually, starting with thinning at the temples or crown and progressing over time. Finasteride is designed to target this specific pattern of hair loss.
At higher doses, finasteride is also used to treat certain prostate conditions. However, only the 1mg dose is prescribed for hair loss.
How Finasteride Works
Male pattern hair loss is largely caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that affects the hair growth cycle. DHT causes hair follicles on the scalp to shrink over time, leading to thinner hair and eventually hair loss.
Finasteride works by reducing the activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. By lowering DHT levels on the scalp, finasteride helps protect hair follicles, slow further hair loss, and support regrowth in affected areas.
Finasteride only works on scalp hair and does not cause hair growth elsewhere on the body. Its benefits continue only while the medication is being taken — stopping treatment will usually lead to a reversal of results within several months.
How to Take Finasteride
Finasteride should be taken once daily, at a time that is easiest for you to remember. Consistency is essential for the treatment to be effective.
-
Take one tablet per day
-
Can be taken with or without food
-
Taking it at the same time each day may help build a routine
If doses are missed or treatment is stopped, the benefits of finasteride will gradually be lost.
Finasteride Dosage
For male pattern hair loss, the recommended dose is:
-
Finasteride 1mg once daily
Do not take more than one tablet per day. Increasing the dose will not improve results and may increase the risk of side effects.
Although finasteride is also available in a 5mg strength, this dosage is licensed for prostate enlargement and is not prescribed for hair loss.
Is Finasteride Effective?
Finasteride is most effective at preventing further hair loss and maintaining existing hair. Some men may also experience regrowth, particularly in areas of recent thinning.
Results typically take several months to become noticeable, and continued daily use is required to maintain benefits.
Possible Side Effects
Most men tolerate finasteride well, and side effects are uncommon. However, like all prescription medicines, it can cause side effects in some individuals.
Possible side effects include:
-
Reduced sex drive
-
Erectile difficulties
-
Mood changes, including low mood or depression
-
Breast tenderness or swelling
-
Skin rash
If you notice changes in mood, new or worsening depression, or anxiety while taking finasteride, stop treatment and seek medical advice promptly.
A small percentage of men experience sexual side effects. In rare cases, these symptoms may continue after stopping treatment. If you experience ongoing sexual side effects, discontinue use and speak to a healthcare professional.
Always read the patient information leaflet for full details.
