Why Am I Still Hungry on Mounjaro?

Still feeling hungry on Mounjaro? Learn why appetite changes vary, how regular balanced meals fit into treatment, and when to speak to your prescriber.

Three faceless lavender figures, each accompanied by an illustrated balanced meal.

Many people expect Mounjaro to stop them feeling hungry altogether. So if you still have an appetite after starting the treatment, it's easy to wonder whether the treatment is actually working.

In most cases, feeling hungry doesn't mean there's a problem.

Mounjaro helps regulate appetite, but it doesn't remove it completely. Hunger is a normal biological response, and everyone responds to the treatment differently. Some people notice a change in their appetite quite quickly, while for others the effect is more gradual as treatment continues.

Here's why you may still feel hungry and when it's worth speaking to your prescriber:

Isn't Mounjaro supposed to stop hunger?

Not completely.

Mounjaro contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, which mimics the action of the naturally occurring hormones GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones are involved in regulating appetite and food intake.

Many people find they feel full sooner during meals and stay satisfied for longer afterwards. That often makes it easier to cumulatively eat fewer calories.

You'll probably still feel hungry at different points during the day, and that's completely normal.

Why do people experience different results?

No two people respond to treatment in exactly the same way.

Changes in appetite can vary depending on factors such as:

  • the dose you are currently taking
  • your eating habits
  • your exercise level
  • your sleeping habits
  • your overall health
Mounjaro appetite factors
Appetite can be influenced by the prescribed dose, eating habits, physical activity, sleep, overall health and daily routine. Follow the dosing schedule agreed with your prescriber.

Some people notice a clear reduction in appetite, while others describe more subtle changes, such as feeling satisfied after smaller meals.

The important thing is not to compare your progress with someone else's.

Mounjaro appetite responses
Some people may feel satisfied with smaller portions. Others may feel less urge to snack between meals. Changes can also be subtle and gradual. Speak to your prescriber if you are concerned.

Could I be eating too little?

Some people worry that because they're less hungry, they should skip meals.

That's not the aim of treatment.

Mounjaro is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not as a replacement for regular meals.

Eating balanced meals can help you get enough protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals while you're losing weight.

If you're unsure how much you should be eating, speak to your prescriber or another healthcare professional.

What if I don't notice any change in my appetite?

Not everyone notices a dramatic difference.

Some people find that their appetite changes gradually as treatment continues and their dose is adjusted according to the licensed dosing schedule.

Others notice changes in portion sizes rather than a complete loss of appetite.

If you're taking Mounjaro exactly as prescribed and you're concerned that it isn't leading to the expected effect, it's a good idea to discuss this with your prescriber rather than making changes yourself.

When should I speak to my prescriber?

You should contact your prescriber if:

  • you're worried the medication isn't working as expected
  • you're struggling with side-effects that affect eating or drinking
  • you have questions about your treatment plan
  • you're thinking about changing your dose without medical advice

Your prescriber can review your progress and decide whether any changes are appropriate.
