Wegovy Pill information

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily weight loss tablet that contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection.

It belongs to a class of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications mimic the action of GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone released by the gut after eating. The Wegovy tablet works in a similar way to the injectable version, but is taken orally rather than as a weekly injection.

Semaglutide may support weight loss by:

  • Reducing appetite and helping to control food cravings

  • Slowing the rate of digestion, helping you feel fuller for longer

  • Supporting healthy blood sugar regulation

Other weight loss treatments also target the GLP-1 pathway, including Mounjaro and Saxenda. Mounjaro works slightly differently by activating both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, while Saxenda targets GLP-1 alone. Unlike the Wegovy pill, both Mounjaro and Saxenda are currently available only as injectable medications.

Wegovy Pill Dosage Guide

The Wegovy pill is available in four dosage strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg. To help minimise side effects and allow your body to adapt, treatment is started at a lower dose and gradually increased over time.

Maintenance dose

Your prescriber may decide to keep you on a particular dose for longer than 30 days if additional time is needed for your body to adjust to the medication. Most patients experience the full therapeutic benefits of the Wegovy pill after reaching the 25mg maintenance dose.

Side effects are often more noticeable when moving up to a higher dose. Following a gradual dose-escalation schedule helps improve tolerability, reduces the likelihood of side effects, and allows your body to adapt more comfortably to treatment.

How to take the Wegovy Pill

The Wegovy pill should be taken once daily on an empty stomach, preferably first thing in the morning, with no more than 120ml of water. The tablet must be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, split, chewed, or dissolved.

After taking your Wegovy tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking anything other than water, or taking any other oral medications. This helps ensure the medicine is absorbed properly and works as intended.

If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed tablet and take your next scheduled dose at the usual time the following day. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed one.

Side effects of the Wegovy Pill

The side effects of the Wegovy pill are similar to those seen with the Wegovy injection, as both treatments contain semaglutide. Most side effects are related to the digestive system and are usually mild to moderate, improving as your body adjusts to the medication.

In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, gastrointestinal side effects were reported in 74% of participants taking the Wegovy pill, compared with 42% of those receiving a placebo. Most side effects were temporary and resolved over time.

The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhoea

  • Vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Stomach pain

  • Tiredness

  • Bloating

  • Heartburn

Side effects are often more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing to a higher dose. Following the recommended dose-escalation schedule can help improve tolerability and reduce the likelihood of side effects.

Although uncommon, the Wegovy pill may occasionally cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

  • Gallbladder problems, including gallstones

  • Dehydration and kidney problems resulting from prolonged nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea

  • Serious allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe skin rash

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), particularly in people taking other diabetes medications

  • Changes in vision in people with type 2 diabetes

  • An increased resting heart rate

The prescribing information also includes a warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumours based on findings from animal studies. As a precaution, the Wegovy pill is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Who is the Wegovy Pill for?

The Wegovy pill is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults who meet the same eligibility criteria as the Wegovy injection. This generally includes people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above if they have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or type 2 diabetes.

The Wegovy pill may be particularly suitable for people who:

  • Prefer taking a daily tablet rather than a weekly injection

  • Have a fear of needles or feel anxious about self-injecting

  • Have experienced injection-site reactions with treatments such as Wegovy or Mounjaro

  • Have achieved their target weight using weight loss injections and are considering a maintenance treatment option

  • Want a convenient oral alternative to injectable GLP-1 medications

The Wegovy pill may not be suitable for everyone and is generally not recommended for:

  • People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)

  • Individuals with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

  • People with a history of pancreatitis or significant kidney problems

  • Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

  • Children and adolescents under the age of 18

  • Anyone who has previously experienced a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any ingredient contained in the Wegovy pill or Wegovy injection

  • The Wegovy pill should not be used alongside any other GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment unless specifically advised by your healthcare professional.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Wegovy Pill?

If you miss a dose of the Wegovy pill, simply skip the missed dose and take your next tablet at your usual scheduled time the following day.

Do not take two tablets at the same time or an extra dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects without improving the effectiveness of the medication.

To help maintain the best results, try to take your Wegovy® pill at the same time each morning as part of your daily routine. If you frequently miss doses or are unsure what to do after missing a dose, speak to your healthcare professional or prescriber for personalised advice.

Missing a single dose occasionally is unlikely to significantly affect your overall weight loss progress, provided you continue taking the medication as prescribed thereafter.

How should I store Wegovy Pill?

To ensure your medication remains effective, store your Wegovy® pills at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Keep the tablets in their original container and make sure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use.

Avoid exposing the medication to excessive heat, moisture, or direct sunlight, as this may affect its quality. For best results, only remove a tablet from the bottle when you are ready to take your dose.

As with all medicines, keep Wegovy pills out of the sight and reach of children and store them according to the instructions provided with your prescription.

Why should you wait 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy Pill?

After taking the Wegovy® pill, it is important to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medications. This allows your body enough time to absorb the active ingredient, semaglutide, properly.

The Wegovy tablet contains an absorption enhancer called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate), which helps semaglutide pass through the stomach lining and enter the bloodstream. Unlike many medications that are absorbed in the intestines, semaglutide is primarily absorbed in the stomach.

Taking the Wegovy pill on an empty stomach and waiting 30 minutes before consuming food, drinks, or other medicines helps maximise absorption and ensures the medication works as intended. Eating or drinking too soon after taking the tablet may reduce the amount of semaglutide your body absorbs, potentially affecting its effectiveness.

For the best results, take your Wegovy pill in the same way each morning and follow the recommended 30-minute waiting period consistently.

Wegovy Pill Clinical Trials: How Effective Is It for Weight Loss?

The effectiveness of the Wegovy pill has been evaluated through the OASIS clinical trial programme, a series of international Phase 3 studies sponsored by Novo Nordisk. These trials investigated oral semaglutide in adults living with overweight or obesity and assessed its ability to support long-term weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. The findings from the OASIS studies provide the strongest clinical evidence available for the Wegovy pill and have helped establish its role as an effective weight management treatment.

Clinical studies show that the Wegovy pill can support substantial weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. At the approved 25mg dose, participants achieved an average weight loss of 16.6% over 64 weeks.

The effectiveness of oral semaglutide has been evaluated through the OASIS clinical trial programme, a series of large-scale studies investigating the use of the Wegovy pill for weight management.

OASIS 4 Trial

In the OASIS 4 study, participants taking the Wegovy pill 25mg once daily, alongside diet and exercise changes, lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. More than one-third of participants (34%) achieved a weight loss of at least 20% of their starting body weight.

OASIS 1 Trial

The earlier OASIS 1 trial evaluated a higher 50mg dose of oral semaglutide. Participants lost an average of 15.1% of their initial body weight over 68 weeks. However, the 50mg dose is not currently licensed or approved for use.

Benefits Beyond Weight Loss

Additional data presented at the European Congress on Obesity 2026 highlighted improvements beyond weight reduction. Analysis from the OASIS 4 study found that approximately 77% of participants with poor physical function at the start of the trial reported meaningful improvements in everyday activities such as standing, bending, and moving around, compared with 43% of those receiving a placebo.
