Vardenafil (Generic Levitra) information

What is Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition where men experience difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. It belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which help increase blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Vardenafil contains the same active ingredient as Levitra and is available in several strengths to accommodate different treatment requirements.

What is generic Levitra?

Vardenafil is the active ingredient originally marketed under the brand name Levitra. Following the expiry of Levitra's patent, other pharmaceutical manufacturers began producing generic vardenafil tablets. These contain the same active ingredient and are required to meet applicable quality, safety and efficacy standards. Although the appearance, packaging and inactive ingredients may differ between manufacturers, licensed generic versions are expected to provide equivalent therapeutic effects.

How does Vardenafil work?

Vardenafil works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), helping to relax blood vessels in the penis and increase blood flow during sexual stimulation. This supports the body's natural erectile response, making it easier for men with erectile dysfunction to achieve and maintain an erection. Vardenafil does not increase sexual desire or cause an automatic erection; sexual stimulation is required for the medication to work.

How should I take Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is usually taken approximately 25–60 minutes before sexual activity, as directed by your prescriber. It can be taken with or without food, although a high-fat meal may delay its effects. The medication may remain effective for around 4–5 hours, but this does not mean you will have a continuous erection. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking vardenafil, as these may increase the amount of medicine in your bloodstream. Excessive alcohol consumption should also be avoided, as it may worsen erectile dysfunction and increase certain side effects.

What dose of Vardenafil should I take?

Vardenafil is available in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets. The usual recommended starting dose is 10mg, taken approximately 25–60 minutes before sexual activity. Depending on how well the medication works, any side effects and your medical circumstances, your prescriber may adjust the dose to 5mg or 20mg. Vardenafil should not be taken more than once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is generally 20mg in 24 hours. Some patients require lower doses because of medical conditions or other medicines. Always follow your prescriber's instructions and never increase your dose without medical advice.

Who should not take Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is not suitable for everyone, particularly men with certain medical conditions or those taking medications that may cause serious interactions. You should not take vardenafil if you:

  • Take nitrate medicines for chest pain (angina), riociguat or recreational drugs known as "poppers".

  • Have had a heart attack or stroke within the last six months.

  • Have severe heart problems, such as unstable angina or severe heart failure, where sexual activity may be unsafe.

  • Have very low blood pressure (below 90/50 mmHg).

  • Have severe liver disease or kidney failure requiring dialysis.

  • Have certain inherited eye conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa, or have previously lost vision in one eye due to non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

  • Are allergic to vardenafil or any other ingredients in the tablets.

  • Take certain medications that are incompatible with vardenafil, including some HIV treatments.

Additional caution and medical assessment are required if you have an irregular heartbeat, other cardiovascular conditions, Peyronie's disease, a history of prolonged erections or certain blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia.

Before starting vardenafil for erectile dysfunction, a qualified prescriber will assess your medical history, current medications and overall suitability to determine whether treatment is appropriate for you.

How effective is Vardenafil?

Clinical studies have demonstrated that vardenafil can improve erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction. It works by supporting the body's natural erectile response during sexual stimulation, helping some men achieve and maintain erections suitable for sexual activity. However, effectiveness varies depending on individual health conditions, the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction and response to treatment. Vardenafil does not work for everyone, and treatment suitability should be assessed by a qualified prescriber.

What are the side effects of Vardenafil?

Like all medicines, vardenafil can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. The most common side effect is headache. Other possible side effects include facial flushing, nasal congestion, dizziness, indigestion and nausea. Less commonly, vomiting and increased sweating may occur. Most side effects are temporary, but you should speak to a healthcare professional if they persist or become troublesome.

Rare but serious side effects require immediate medical attention. Seek emergency help if you experience chest pain, a severe allergic reaction or an erection lasting four hours or longer. If you develop chest pain, do not take nitrate medicines and inform the emergency medical team that you have taken vardenafil. Stop taking vardenafil and seek urgent medical advice if you experience sudden loss or changes in vision or hearing.

Does Vardenafil interact with other medications?

Vardenafil can interact with certain medications, potentially causing serious side effects. It must not be taken with nitrate medicines, including glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) and isosorbide mononitrate, or with riociguat, as these combinations can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Nicorandil, which is used to treat angina, can also cause a serious interaction. Recreational drugs known as "poppers", which may contain amyl nitrite or similar substances, must also be avoided.

Other medications, including certain alpha-blockers, antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments and medicines for irregular heart rhythms, may interact with vardenafil. Always tell your prescriber about all medicines and supplements you take before starting treatment. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication without first consulting a healthcare professional.

What causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. It can result from physical, psychological or lifestyle factors, including stress, anxiety, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Certain medications can also contribute to erection problems. Because erectile dysfunction may sometimes indicate an underlying health condition, medical assessment is important, particularly when symptoms are new or persistent

What are the alternatives to Vardenafil?

Other oral treatments for erectile dysfunction include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and avanafil (Spedra). These medicines belong to the same class of PDE5 inhibitors but differ in their onset of action, duration and administration requirements. For men who cannot use oral treatments or do not respond adequately, other options may include alprostadil, vacuum erection devices or psychological therapies. The most appropriate approach depends on individual circumstances and clinical assessment.

Are there different manufacturers of Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is available as a generic medicine from different pharmaceutical manufacturers. Although licensed generic tablets contain the same active ingredient and must meet relevant quality and regulatory standards, their appearance, packaging and inactive ingredients may differ. The manufacturer supplied may depend on stock availability and the product prescribed.

What is the Vardenafil patient information leaflet?

The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is supplied with vardenafil tablets and contains important information about how to take the medicine, possible side effects, warnings, contraindications and interactions. Patients should read the leaflet before starting treatment and follow the instructions provided by their prescriber.
