Product Description

What Is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a medicine belonging to a group called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

It is commonly used to treat acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Omeprazole is also prescribed for stomach and duodenal ulcers, including ulcers caused by NSAID painkillers or Helicobacter pylori infection. In rarer cases, it is used to treat conditions where the stomach produces too much acid.

How to Take Omeprazole

Always take omeprazole exactly as prescribed.

  • Usually taken once daily, preferably in the morning

  • Can be taken with or without food

  • Swallow tablets whole with water

  • Do not chew or crush the tablets

If You Miss or Take Too Much

  • If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose

  • Do not take a double dose

  • If you take more than prescribed, contact a doctor or pharmacist straight away

Do not stop taking omeprazole without medical advice.

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate omeprazole well, but side effects can occur.

Common side effects include headache, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, wind, nausea, or vomiting.

Less common side effects may include dizziness, sleep problems, skin rash, fatigue, or swelling of the feet and ankles. Long-term use may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures.

Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, serious skin reactions, liver problems, kidney inflammation, or changes in blood cells. Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe rash, swelling, breathing difficulties, persistent fever, yellowing of the skin, or signs of infection.

Long-term use may also affect magnesium or vitamin levels, which your doctor may monitor.

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet for full safety details.
