Product Description

What Is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is a medicine known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, helping to relieve symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). It is also used to treat and prevent stomach and duodenal ulcers.

Lansoprazole is available as a generic medicine and can also be found under the brand name Zoton FasTabs.

Lansoprazole vs Omeprazole

Lansoprazole and omeprazole are both PPIs and work in a similar way by lowering stomach acid. They contain different active ingredients, which means they may work slightly differently for some people and come in different dose options.

Both treatments are effective. If one does not work well or causes side effects, a doctor may recommend switching to the other.

How Lansoprazole Works

Lansoprazole blocks enzymes in the stomach lining known as proton pumps, which are responsible for producing stomach acid. By reducing acid levels, it helps relieve irritation of the food pipe and stomach caused by excess acid.

How Effective Is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is an effective treatment for acid-related conditions. Some people notice improvement within a few days, although it can take up to four weeks to feel the full benefit.

Results are often improved when treatment is combined with lifestyle changes such as avoiding trigger foods, reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking, and avoiding late-night meals.

How to Take Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole is usually taken once or twice daily, depending on your condition. It should be taken at least 30 minutes before food and swallowed whole with water. Taking it at the same time each day helps ensure consistent results.

Dosage Information

Typical doses include 15–30mg daily for indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux, and 30mg daily for stomach or duodenal ulcers. Your dose may be adjusted if you are older or have liver problems. Do not take a double dose if you miss one.

Who Can Take Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is suitable for most adults when prescribed by a doctor. It should not be taken if you are allergic to lansoprazole or other PPIs.

Speak to your doctor before taking lansoprazole if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver problems, have low vitamin B12 levels, are due to have certain blood tests or an endoscopy, or have a sugar intolerance.

Possible Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and often improve within a few weeks. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, tiredness, dry mouth, or skin rash.

Less common side effects may include joint or muscle pain, low mood, swelling, or an increased risk of bone fractures with long-term use.

Serious side effects are rare but include severe allergic reactions, serious skin reactions, or liver problems. Seek urgent medical help if these occur.

Long-Term Use

Using lansoprazole for several months or longer may lower magnesium levels, increase the risk of bone fractures, or lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. If used long term, your doctor will monitor your health regularly to ensure treatment remains safe and effective.

Important Information

Always take lansoprazole exactly as prescribed and read the Patient Information Leaflet provided with your medication. If symptoms persist or you experience side effects, speak to a healthcare professional.
